Herbal Thanksgiving

Herbal Thanksgiving

I have been giving a lot of thought to writing a blog and what I would like to share with you for the first post. So I settled on my birds to start in this first essay since it is Turkey week for many of us.

I raise chickens and most recently ducks. Each night they get closed into a pen for safety and let out at different times in the day so as to not set a pattern for predators to follow. The birds are let out to wander through the gardens eating a bit of this and a bit of that; slugs, snails, and bugs are high on the diet, but I also notice they like small amounts of different herbs such as oregano, rosemary, thyme and wormwood. These simple food herbs are known to help with digestion and parasites for all animals, including us humans.

The bird’s favorite food by far is chickweed as it’s a tasty treat for them. For us humans, chickweed has a number of benefits; it’s good for removing excess water, and for both internal and external inflammation with its ability to cool our bodies. It is also known to help soothe digestion, break down excess fat and works as a gentle laxative too. Of all of chickweed’s many benefits, most importantly it will help us digest our wonderful turkey dinners and all the trimmings that come with it in the up coming holidays.

This is a time to be thankful for all of our blessings and for Mountain Spirit there are many. I have been working hard to update labels and bring the shop’s production into compliance with the requirements of the FDA, Federal Drug Administration. It has been an amazing year and best of all, we are still here working and helping our community.

I’m sure it’s a common weed, but what does chick weed look Like? Do you at it as salad, or as an Herb? Thanks.
